Ever wonder if there’s a better way of managing your actions and keeping track of your To Do List? This book by Maura Nevel Thomas will help you evaluate how efficiently you organize and track tasks. Like, super-efficiently.
From To Do to Done: How you can go from busy to productive by mastering the to-do list is part of the Empowered Productivity series by Ignite Reads.
It’s a short, colourful, well-organized, and giftable book that is designed to make an impact in under an hour.
The book will guide you through the six steps.
Manage your actions
Organizing your time
Organizing your task list
Making it easy for you to do things
How to choose productivity tools
Work with your system.
The author argues that productivity can be defined by doing what is important to you: what kind of life do you want? You can work towards this. Like many productivity books today, such as Getting It All Done (and other modern productivity books), the focus is on what you want out of your life and what ‘counts’ to you. Then, build the rest of your activities and time around that.
Thomas gives detailed instructions on how to manage action: Collecting, tracking, managing and, most importantly, performing tasks. I prefer the term “action management” to what I use, task management. Action management means that there is movement, something is happening, or work being done. Task management means you have a list. It’s easy to see the difference.
I learned some valuable tips from this book and consider myself to be a competent task manager. As a project manager, organizing tasks and those of others is part of the job.
Some ideas challenged my thinking, like her view on how to categorize tasks. Although her view on time blocking, which is reserving time in your schedule for focused work on a specific topic, is not something I do, it’s not a criticism. It’s refreshing to learn about the different ways people approach their work.
I’ve been reading a lot of productivity books and time management books lately. This may be due to COVID-19 and the shift to more virtual work where tech seems both a help or a hindrance because of the culture of being ‘always-on’.
This is a very enjoyable read. It’s easy to read, concise, and practical. You can also use the task management strategies immediately. Oops. I meant “action management” strategies. To be able to focus my mind and make the most of my time organizing my work, I must adopt this shift in my own language.
You could gift From To Do to Done as a gift to your team or busy person in your life. They won’t take it wrongly, I think.
